Pittsburgh’s Free School Lunches

Pittsburgh schools will be offering free lunches to everyone this fall. This on top of free breakfasts.  What’s next? Free dinners and snacks?

The first thing to observe is that these free lunches are not free. They are courtesy of the U.S. taxpayers in the form of a new Federal program.  So on top of the “free” education the taxpayers are now on the hook to replace irresponsible parents who cannot get up and prepare lunch and breakfast for their children.  Another Federal program added to the millions of others that were supposed to work society healing miracles.  All they have done is produce a large dependent, welfare entitlement mentality sector within the population. More taxpayer generosity inevitably creates the need for another round of taxpayer generosity.  When charity is governmentalized it becomes a never ending growth industry. It is the ultimate dead hand lying on the country.

But the real immediate question or the Pittsburgh schools is this; Will free lunches for everyone lead to better academic achievement? The $20,000 plus per student expenditures and countless other programs have been utter failures. Why would anyone think this is some kind of magic solution?
