City Wins on Police Residency

The state’s Commonwealth Court has reversed the decision of Allegheny County Common Pleas Court on an arbitration decision on Pittsburgh police residency requirements.

As we noted in a 2012 Policy Brief, the requirement that police officers hired by the City of Pittsburgh to become residents of the City as a condition of employment was amended (from “shall” to “may”).  An arbitration decision in March of 2014 ruled that City police would be able to reside within a 25 mile radius of Downtown Pittsburgh.  The City took that ruling to Common Pleas Court, lost, appealed to Commonwealth Court, and won today.
