Wilkinsburg-Pittsburgh Agreement Goes Forward

Plenty of details will be coming on the arrangement between the school districts of Wilkinsburg and Pittsburgh, an arrangement that we have written about.  Wilkinsburg becomes the second school district in the County where high school students are sent to a district other than their own (Duquesne is the other, since 2007 students have gone to East Allegheny or West Mifflin).

Let’s look at the fact that there will be another school closed when Wilkinsburg sends its students to Pittsburgh.  These two articles from 2014 (here and here) show the number of school closings since 2004 in Allegheny County and what has been done with that school.  Wilkinsburg closed one K-6 school in since that year (the state educational directory shows a closing date of June 2012) and presumably the building(s) serving students who will be headed to Westinghouse in the Pittsburgh Public School District will be shuttered.  The Pittsburgh Public School District itself has closed 36 schools since 2004.
