The commission that is charged with establishing a formula for distributing basic education funding from the state has begun its work out east.  The first hearing was held in Harrisburg, and it appears from published reports that the immediate subsequent hearings will take place in the Lehigh Valley and then Philadelphia.

We wrote about comments related to the school funding system in Pennsylvania back in March when a hearing was held in Ross Township, part of the North Hills School District.  By looking at the amount of money the district received from the state, the amount per-pupil, and the concept of a flat dollar amount per student, regardless of district, and what that would mean to a district like North Hills.

The chair of the commission echoed those thoughts, noting that as work begins they are asking “How do we look at it? Do we look at it on a per-student basis; on a per-classroom basis? On a per-school-district basis?”  The Governor similarly asked a hypothetical about what a fair funding formula would look like.

The report from the commission is due next June.
