A Useful Tool in the State-Local Police Coverage Issue

Want to know where municipalities have contracted with the state police for part- or full-time coverage instead of having their own local department or entering into a multi-municipal arrangement?  An article that was published today contains a database that collects 2015 numbers for municipalities across the state.

In Allegheny County, where most municipalities have a department, only three communities reported state police responses in 2015: Fawn Township, with part-time coverage, Haysville and Glenfield with full-time coverage.  More numerous communities in the neighboring counties of Westmoreland, Washington, Beaver, and Butler reported state police responses.

The issue of state police patrolling communities that don’t have local police coverage has been an issue for some time, one we first wrote about in 2008, but is part of the 2017-18 budget deliberations with a proposed $25 per person fee.
