The American Public Transit Association has released 2015 transit ridership statistics for transit providers around the country, including the Port Authority of Allegheny County.  The stats cover multiple modes of transportation (bus, light rail, heavy rail, commuter rail).  PAT’s majority of rides come through buses (83% of the Authority’s total unlinked trips, which came in at 64.3 million); add in light rail and 96% of the total trips are accounted for.

So how did 2015 fare for the Authority?  Bus trips totaled 53.5 million, which was up over the 52.2 million in 2014, or 2.34%.  When compared to APTA’s summary bus peer group (serving an urbanized area of 1 million people and operating 300 or more peak hour buses), PAT did better year over year (trips fell 2.54%).

On the light rail side, PAT had 8.132 million light rail trips, down slightly from 2014 (8.166 million trips).  In the light rail peer group the trips increased 0.37% year over year.

APTA data goes back twenty years, so how does PAT compare on trips from where is stood in 1995?  That year, there were 64.0 million bus trips, so in 2015 bus trips are down 16%.  In 1995, light rail trips totaled 7.572 million trips, so the 8.132 million trips represent a 7% increase.  In terms of overall service, bus trips remain around the same proportion of service (83-85%) in 2015 as they did two decades ago,
