The Upside Down World of Republican Leadership

Incredibly, it was reported July 20 that Speaker Perzel is considering appointing Rich Stannizo, a prominent labor union official, to the state Oversight Board for Pittsburgh. What is up with this? With this appointment, the Oversight Board will have become totally useless as a watchdog for City finances.

This action follows the House and Senate Republican leadership leading a minority of their party to vote for the Governor’s spendthrift budget. Votes that were needed to pass the budget. Something is dreadfully amiss when a party’s principal leaders are so far out of step with the rank and file of their own party. The only real question is: how do they get to keep their leadership positions?

Could this happen anywhere but in Pennsylvania?
